    The Mixolydian mode is sometimes called ‘Dominant’ because it is the mode built on the fifth degree (Dominant) of the Major (Ionian) scale. Sound confusing? Let’s break it down: The difference between the Major (Ionian) scales, arpeggios and chords you mastered in JGS-01 and the Mixolydian (Dominant) scales, arpeggios and chords is just one note.     The Dorian mode aka ‘Jazz Minor’ is built on the second degree or mode of the Major (Ionian) scale. On the piano, it is a strictly diatonic scale that corresponds to the white keys of the piano from “D” to “D”, or any transposition of its interval pattern. Again, the Dorian mode only has one note difference when compared to the Dominant (Mixolydian) scales, arpeggios and chords you mastered in JGS-02. Nice!     The Aeolian mode aka ‘Natural Minor’ is built on the sixth mode of the Major (Ionian) scale and has the formula 1, 2, ♭3, 4, 5, ♭6, ♭7. In C, this is C, D, E♭, F, G, A♭, B♭ (three flats); in A, this is A, B, C, D, E, F, G (no flats or sharps). From the point of view of its relative major key, the ‘Aeolian’ is also known as the ‘Relative Minor.’ Musicianship and practical application will be covered via the Jazz Guitar Vlog and backing tracks are provided by Real Book Jazz Tracks.

    The ‘Locrian’ mode may be considered a minor scale with the second and fifth scale degrees lowered a half step (1 fret). The Locrian mode may also be considered to be a scale beginning on the seventh scale degree of any Ionian, or major scale. Work that out on the guitar before you proceed. The Locrian mode has the formula 1, ♭2, ♭3, 4, ♭5, ♭6, ♭7. Its tonic chord is a diminished triad (Bdim in the Locrian mode of the diatonic scale corresponding to C major). The Locrian mode is the only mode in which the tonic triad is a diminished chord and considered dissonant. Try playing it on the piano and you will see what is meant by dissonant.
